The Role of Women’s Leadership in Faith Communities. Marking 80 Years of Women in the Rabbinate
2015 jährt sich die Ordination von Regina Jonas (1902 – 1944) zum 80. Mal. Ihr Rabbinatsdiplom markiert den Anfang der Gleichberechtigung jüdischer Frauen auch im geistlichen Amt, die allerdings mit der Schoa ein jähes Ende nahm. Als 1972 in den USA Sally Priesand ordiniert wurde, galt diese für lange Zeit als erste Rabbinerin der Welt. Dass vor ihr bereits 1935 eine Absolventin der Berliner Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judentums diesen Status erreicht hatte, gelangte erst in den 1990er Jahren wieder ins öffentliche Bewusstsein.
Die international und interdisziplinär ausgerichtete englischsprachige Konferenz „The Role of Women’s Leadership in Faith Communities“ will unter anderem die erfolgreiche Emanzipationsgeschichte jüdischer Frauen in Deutschland ins öffentliche Gedächtnis zurückrufen. Der Vergleich mit Reformprozessen in den Kirchen zeigt die Nähe von Judentum und Christentum in ihrer jeweiligen Auseinandersetzung mit Tradition und Erneuerung. Die Konferenz soll Grundlagen für eine wissenschaftliche Historisierung und Kontextualisierung feministischer Aufbrüche im Judentum schaffen und dazu beitragen, die jüdische theologische Frauenforschung zu verstetigen und zu institutionalisieren.
Den Festvortrag zur Eröffnung, “The Presence and Absence of Women in the Intellectual History of the Jewish Community”, hält Prof. Dr. Rachel Elior (Hebrew University of Jerusalem).
Die Tagung findet den Mittwoch über an der Universität Potsdam und am Donnerstag in Berlin statt. Den Abschlussvortrag hält die Präsidentin der Central Conference of American Rabbis, Rabbinerin Denise L. Eger.

This fall, Abraham Geiger College and the School of Jewish Theology at the University of Potsdam will mark the 80th anniversary of Rabbi Regina Jonas’ ordination with an international conference, “The Role of Women’s Leadership in Faith Communities.”
More than 30 presenters from Europe, Israel and the United States will explore the impact of women in the rabbinate and the ministry, discuss issues of leadership and authority, women’s religious scholarship and gender (in)equality today.
The ceremonial address, “The Presence and Absence of Women in the Intellectual History of the Jewish Community” will be delivered by Professor Rachel Elior (Hebrew University of Jerusalem). The Wednesday sessions will take place at the University of Potsdam in the outskirts of Berlin, with an Opening Address by Professor Pamela S. Nadell (American University Washington, DC). On Wednesday evening, we will mark Günter Stemberger’s scholarship with a honorary PhD degree, with Professor Charlotte Fonrobert, of Stanford, giving the laudatory speech. Thursday sessions are scheduled for Berlin, with a concert to conclude our conference in the evening.
CCAR President Rabbi Denise L. Eger (Los Angeles) has kindly agreed to join us for our conference - and to challenge us to to make Judaism bigger, more accepting and more inviting. She will talk about “Women as Agents for Future Change".
