Matej Bel University (UMB) is the leading university in Central Slovakia. It has six faculties (Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Political Sciences and International Relations, and Faculty of Education), almost 650 university teachers and researchers, and around 12,000 students. The Institute of Social and Cultural Studies of the Faculty of Humanities is the leading Slovak socio-cultural anthropological research centre in women and science, with expertise in the social and cultural transformation of the post-socialist society, diversity, gender, and identity. It recent years, it has rapidly developed a track record of international collaborative research, through its involvement in several EC FP projects.

Recent projects concerned with gender equality include, in FP5, EGG: Enlargement Gender and Governance: Participation of Women in the Civic and Political Life in the
EU Candidate Countries, in FP6, a Network of Excellence SUS.DIV: Sustainable Development in a Diverse World and in FP7 GENDERA: Gender Debate in the European Research Area, 2009-2012. The team members are also active members of the Working Group on Women and Science at the Committee of Gender Equality at the Slovak Ministry of Labour.
