Durch das Bundesstatistikgesetz 2000 (BStatG) wurde das Österreichische Statistische Zentralamt mit Wirksamkeit vom 1. Jänner 2000 aus dem Bundesdienst ausgegliedert und als selbständige, nicht gewinnorientierte Bundesanstalt öffentlichen Rechts mit dem Namen Bundesanstalt Statistik Österreich errichtet. Ihre Aufgabe ist die Erbringung von Dienstleistungen wissenschaftlichen Charakters auf dem Gebiet der Bundesstatistik (§ 22 BStatG).
