Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (Spain)
The Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) is a pioneering virtual university based in Barcelona and with a world-wide presence. Established in 1994, the UOC is widely acknowledged as a global leader in excellence in internet-based higher education. The Internet Interdisciplinary Institute (IN3) is a research institute of the UOC which specialises in studies of the network society and the knowledge economy, as well as of network technologies and specific areas of software. The IN3 is organised into research programmes and groups, of which one of the most internationally prominent is the Gender and ICT Programme. The Gender and ICT Programme focuses on the gender issues and challenges in science, technology and innovation, with particular emphasis on women’s under-representation in all these fields.
Portia (UK)
Portia was established in 1997 by a group of female scientists working at Imperial College and incorporated as a not-for-profit company in 2001. The original motivation was to respond to the then UK government's concerns about under-representation of women in Science, Engineering and Technology. More lately, we have focused on the role of gender as a dimension of quality in research and innovation.
Fondazione Giacomo Brodolini (Italy)
Fondazione Giacomo Brodolini was established in 1971, and its work focuses on: sociology and labour law, equalities, industrial relations, training policies, & economics. Over the last 10 years the Foundation has built up a solid portfolio of work on gender equality, through its co-ordination and partnership role in many European projects. It has considerable experience of managing European projects, and of managing international expert groups, including the Commission’s EGGE Network (Employment and Gender Equality), the EGGSI group (Gender Equality, social inclusion, health and long-term care), and since this year, the ENEGE network (European Network of Experts in Gender Equality). It has recently launched an online review www.ingenere.it, dealing with gender equality from an economic and sociological perspective.
On gender and science, FGB has been a partner in two EC projects: the Meta-analysis of Gender and Science Research (coordinated by Maria Caprile when she was based at the Centre d’Iniciatives i Recerques Europees a la Mediterrànea (CIREM)), and the Wonbit (Women on biotechnologies: feminist and scientific approach) project, with Associazione Donna e Scienza (Italy). It is now leading the FP7 Gender in Science and Technology LAB – GENIS LAB.
Univerzita Mateja Bela v Banskey Bystrici (Slovakia)
Matej Bel University (UMB) is the leading university in Central Slovakia. It has six faculties (Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Political Sciences and International Relations, and Faculty of Education), almost 650 university teachers and researchers, and around 12,000 students. The Institute of Social and Cultural Studies of the Faculty of Humanities is the leading Slovak socio-cultural anthropological research centre in women and science, with expertise in the social and cultural transformation of the post-socialist society, diversity, gender, and identity. It recent years, it has rapidly developed a track record of international collaborative research, through its involvement in several EC FP projects.
Recent projects concerned with gender equality include, in FP5, EGG: Enlargement Gender and Governance: Participation of Women in the Civic and Political Life in the
EU Candidate Countries, in FP6, a Network of Excellence SUS.DIV: Sustainable Development in a Diverse World and in FP7 GENDERA: Gender Debate in the European Research Area, 2009-2012. The team members are also active members of the Working Group on Women and Science at the Committee of Gender Equality at the Slovak Ministry of Labour.
Örebro Universitet (Sweden)
Örebro is one of the fastest growing universities in Sweden, providing education and conducting research in humanities, law, social science, science, technology, medicine & health care, education, music and sport science. It has 17,000 students, and employs 1,200 staff. Its equality activities include an equality committee, an equality network, an equality plan and two equality advisers in the Rectors’ office. The Centre for Feminist Social Studies is a multidisciplinary gender studies research environment at the ORU School of Humanities, Education and Social Science. CFS co-operates closely with the Gender Studies Department at Linköping University through the Joint University Thematic Gender Institute that the universities set up in 2006, and through the two-university Centre of Gender Excellence GEXcel, funded by Swedish Research Council since 2007. This is to be continued as GEXcel International Collegium for Advanced Transdisciplinary Gender Studies 2012 and hosted jointly by the two universities.
Gesis - Leibniz Institut für Sozialwissenschaften e.V. (Germany)
GESIS – Leibniz-Institute for the Social Sciences is the largest social science institution in Germany, with more than 250 employees in Mannheim, Cologne, and Berlin. The Center of Excellence Women and Science was founded in 2000, and is a research and policy think-tank within GESIS serving women scientists, universities, research and scientific institutions, and political committees. It is the national node for promoting gender equality in science and research in Germany. CEWS provides impetus for new ideas, initiates policy change to support scientific endeavour, and drives knowledge transfer between science and politics. CEWS conducts both EU-and German-level projects concerned with equality policies and good practice measures at the highest levels. CEWS staff have expertise in social science research on equal opportunities in science, in policy consultations, in knowledge transfer; and in the monitoring and evaluation of equality measures in science.
