In June 2016, The Global Research Council updated its “Statement of Principles and Actions Promoting the Equality and Status of Women in Research” at the 2016 Annual Meeting to include the objective to:

Recognise the advantages of considering the gender dimension in research and encourage the development of this.

This GRC recommendation was agreed upon by over 100 delegates, with over 50 Heads of Research Councils from around 45 countries during a meeting in New Delhi in may 2016. It follows on the leadership established earlier by several research funders in Europe (Norway, Sweden, Ireland, Germany) and the European Commission through Horizon 2020.

This online discussion is designed to help advance and realize actions to accommodate the role of gender in research content, process and impact by bringing together representatives from RFOs to share their expertise, experience and views as to what is possible and practical.  We invite genPORT users who have an interest in how this goal can be effectively achieved to join the discussion, learn from the experts, contribute their expertise, and enable lasting change to take place.

Discussions will be framed around 5 topics:

7th July: Gender dimension in Research Content, 2:00 - 4:00pm (Brussels time)

  • measures to ensure that applicants consider the role of sex-gender factors in research content
  • measures to promote systematic analysis of gender dimension in research content, process and outcomes
  • measures to develop evidence showing strategic benefits of gender sensitive and responsive research

8th July: Research Grants Process, 2:00 - 4:00pm (Brussels time)

  • measures to achieve sufficient gender balance among applicants for research grants, and among grant evaluation panels
  • measures to ensure that women and men have the same success rates and receive the same average grant amount, taking into account the nature of the research and the type of grant

Experts will outline recent developments and discussions in their organisations, giving, where possible, concrete examples of the directions and actions taken. Participants are invited to actively contribute to the discussion presenting their own research, methodologies, or posing questions to the expert panel.

This discussion is part of a series of on-line events enabled by the GenPORT portal to help disseminate gender mainstreaming best practice, and to share growing expertise on topics of mutual interest.
