Course Description
Gender and Development is an interdisciplinary course that critically examines the relationship between gender, development, and social justice. The course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of how gender affects development outcomes and how development policies and programs can promote gender equality and empowerment. The course will explore the key concepts and theories related to gender and development, such as the social construction of gender, intersectionality, and feminist development.
The course will also examine the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the role of gender mainstreaming in achieving these goals. Students will learn how gender mainstreaming can ensure that development policies and programs are designed and implemented in ways that address the needs and priorities of both women and men, and promote gender equality and empowerment.
The course will also engage students in critical analysis of case studies from different regions of the world, including Asia, Africa, and Latin America. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the knowledge and analytical tools to understand the complexities of gender and development and to critically evaluate development policies and programs from a gender perspective.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this Gender and Development course, students will be able to:
- Analyze the relationship between gender and development, and understand how gender inequalities and discrimination impact development outcomes.
- Evaluate the significance of gender mainstreaming and its role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- Examine the social construction of gender, and analyze how gender intersects with other identities such as race, class, and sexuality.
- Critically assess feminist perspectives on development and their contribution to the field of gender and development.
- Apply gender analysis tools to evaluate development policies and programs, and identify areas for improvement to promote gender equality and empowerment.
- Develop effective strategies for promoting gender equality and empowerment, and design and implement development programs that are gender-responsive and inclusive.
Target Audience:
The Gender and Development course is designed for participants from various disciplines, including development studies, sociology, gender studies, and international relations. The course is also suitable for professionals working in development-related fields, including policymakers, government officials, non-governmental organizations, and United Nations agencies, who seek to enhance their knowledge and skills in gender and development and promote gender equality and empowerment in their work.
Technical Requirement
To participate in this online course, participants will need a reliable internet connection and a computer, laptop, or mobile device. The course will be hosted on Global Human Rights Leadership Training Institute platform, which participants will access using their web browser. The platform is compatible with most modern web browsers, such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari. Additional technology requirements will be communicated to participants in advance if necessary.
Award of the Certificates
Participants, who successfully complete all course requirements, including assignments and assessments, will be awarded a certificate of completion in Gender and Development (GDT). The certificate will highlight the skills and knowledge gained in the course, providing valuable recognition of the participant's achievements.
Course Fee
The course fee for is US$300. Limited partial scholarships are available for participants developing countries who demonstrate financial need. Details on the partial scholarship application process will be provided upon registration.
Duration/Time Commitment
The course has duration of 50 hours, which can be completed over a period of four (4) weeks. Participants will have access to the course materials and assignments 24/7 and can complete the coursework at their own pace. Additionally, there is a possibility of an extension if required. This flexibility allows participants to balance their work and personal commitments while still benefiting from the course.
