This brief paper highlights the EU/US Gendered Innovations (GI) Project which aims to develop methods of sex and gender analysis for research. A total of 21 case studies from a broad range of scientific fields offer concrete illustrations of how sex and gender analysis leads to new ideas and excellence in research . Two case studies are described to some extent: stem cell research and an example on the increase in non-communicable diseases from the field of nutrigenomics. The peerreviewed full case studies, including all references can be found at the GI website. In Horizon 2020 “Gender will be addressed as a cross-cutting issue in order to rectify imbalances between women and men, and to integrate a gender dimension in research and innovation programming and content”. Applicants are referred to the GI materials as a resource for those topics flagged for gender relevance.

Gender equality is a goal in its own right, but it is also vital to the achievement of other development goals, such as poverty reduction and environmental sustainability. To ensure that men and women can equally access, participate and benefit from development projects and that gender inequalities in activities and outcomes are reduced or eliminated, gender di$erences need to be considered during the entire project cycle—from design and implementation to monitoring and evaluation. While UN Women has a specific mandate to work on empowering women, all United Nations agencies have a responsibility to work with a gender perspective and to understand how and where gender issues are relevant to fulfilling their mandate. By systematically mainstreaming gender into their interventions, UNIDO’s Energy and Climate Change Branch (ECC) can ensure equal opportunities for women and men, thus furthering UNIDO’s inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) agenda and contributing to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the post-2015 development framework, as well as the Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) objectives. This Guide aims at “demystifying” gender mainstreaming and providing practical guidance on how to systematically address gender inequalities specific to UNIDO’s energy and climate change interventions.

Around 138,400 pedestrians and cyclists lost their lives on EU roads between 2001 and 2013. 7,600 were killed in 2013 alone. Deaths among pedestrians and cyclists, who are the most vulnerable road users and whose use of the roads is being encouraged for reasons of health and sustainability, account for 29% of all road deaths across the EU. Pedestrians killed represent 21% and cyclists 8% of all road deaths. But big disparities exist between countries. Moreover, there is a high level of underreporting of collisions involving pedestrians and cyclists. Deaths of unprotected road users have been decreasing at a slower rate than those of vehicle occupants. In the last ten years deaths among pedestrians decreased by 41%, those among cyclists by 37% and those among power two wheeler (PTW) users by 34% compared to a 53% decrease for vehicle occupants (Fig. 1). Since 2010 the reduction in the number of pedestrian and cyclist deaths has slowed down markedly. The safety of unprotected road users should therefore receive special attention from policymakers at the national and European levels. As active travel is being encouraged, the safety of walking and cycling in particular must be addressed urgently.
